It is with great sadness that SPAN Parent Advocacy Network shares the passing of Dr. Cheryl Chavis, a fierce advocate for children and families. Dr. Chavis worked closely with SPAN’s NJ Inclusive Child Care Project in our shared mission rooted in the service of children and families. She was a tireless advocate for equity and inclusion in her personal and professional life whether that was through her work at the NAACP or through her work with the MAP to inclusive child care team or many other projects working to address the barriers to inclusion faced by marginalized children and families.
The NJ Inclusive Child Care Project and the entire Early Childhood Program team @SPAN is deeply saddened by the irreplaceable loss of Dr. Chavis. Her passion and energy for supporting children and families were inspiring and contagious. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends during this challenging time. ~ Deepa Srinivasavaradan
SPAN joins Marianna Finamore, Executive Director of Rutgers Child Care Resource and Referral Agency in a heartfelt expression of loss.
Cheryl was an integral member of the Rutgers Southern Regional CCR&R Agency, with a deep history in the southern New Jersey early childhood community. The dedication Cheryl had for her work was evident and lifelong. Throughout her many roles, as a child care center Director, an Adjunct Professor at Camden County College, a Lecturer at Rutgers University, a Community & Parent Involvement Specialist with the Camden City School District and, Trainer with the CCR&R, her passion shined bright and her commitment to children and families was always at the forefront.
Cheryl will be missed by the countless co-workers, child care providers, community members and families that she has assisted and shared her days with. Each of us not only grieves at the passing of a tremendous individual, but also for the loss her family suffers. Cheryl was a devoted mother and grandmother, and remarkable support to her extended family. Please keep Cheryl’s family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
