USED Moves to Rescind Guidance & Dear Colleague Letters

  • The US Department of Education Office of Special Education & Rehabilitative Services has rescinded a list of 72 sets of guidance and Dear Colleague letters regarding IDEA and the Rehabilitation Act.

NEW Guide for Developing Special Education Parent Advisory Groups

SPAN and the NJ Department of Education just launched a new resource, "Special Education Parent Advisory Groups in New Jersey:  A Guide to Developing and Running an Effective SEPAG."

The very teamwork and collaboration that are at the core of IDEA are also at the core of Special Education Advisory Group (SEPAG) development. SEPAGs engage parents, community leaders, and school district staff in collaborative teamwork to improve education, not only for those with disabilities, but for all children.

Statewide Parent to Parent Support

The DCF Commissioner recently announced support for a Mom 2 Mom Program, a call center for families of children with disabilities experiencing stress and mental health concerns.  The role of Mom 2 Mom is to assess mental health risks and then connect families of children with developmental disabilities to mental health and other service providers.  This will meet an important need of families who have children with disabilities.  The services available through Mom 2 Mom will not include advocacy to help families access the services and supports their child and family need.
