Now That School Is In Session, What About After School Care?

After numerous budget cuts, staff reductions and program reductions across the State, the new school year is underway. New Jersey students are settling in and getting acquainted or re-acquainted with their classmates and teachers. For many parents, this school year was preceded with anxieties over what to do when the school day is over. For parents whose children have disabilities or special needs, it can be a daunting task selecting a child care provider that can and is willing to meet the needs of their children.

Parents can take comfort in knowing that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires all programs, and clubs to make reasonable accommodations so children with disabilities, or suspected of having a disability, have access to their programs or clubs. Parents should keep in mind that any after school program sponsored, financed or supported by their local school district can be a viable alternative. Programs such as before and after care programs, sports, drama, theatre, and music can be potential programs where your child can receive after school enrichment in a nonacademic and extracurricular setting. Depending upon your child's age and interest, these district programs could be useful in bridging the gap between school and home. For more ideas on how to include after school programs in your childs Individual Education Plan (IEP), you can contact the Statewide Parent Advocacy Nework New Jersey Inclusive Child Care Project (NJICCP), or email childcare@spannj.org
